A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl on the premises of the US embassy in the Indian capital, Delhi.

The 5-year-old girl is playing outside the embassy’s staff quarters before “was lured and raped by a neighbour,” Eish Singhal, deputy commissioner of Delhi police, told CNN.

The family of the 5-year-old girl lives on the grounds of the embassy, working as a member of the housekeeping staff, later identified the 25-year-old male suspect, who has been arrested and charged with rape, police said.

Police said the accused, a driver, is not employed by the embassy. However, he lives with his parents in the embassy’s staff quarters as his father works there. “She was able to identify him point blank and there is no doubt over this,” Singhal said, adding that the suspect remains in custody.
